AA - Aertssen klaar voor een dubbel zo groot Zwin 2-2

"We will construct a new international dyke of no less than 3.7 km long, 7 m high and 55-70 m wide. This should protect the Zwin against possible storms."

120 extra hectares for the Zwin

Good news for the fauna and flora in the Zwin, because this cross-border nature reserve near Knokke-Heist is going to become almost twice as big. Aertssen is helping with its reconstruction, so that this valuable area will not be lost to silting. On 22 August, the official ground-breaking for an additional 120 hectares at Zwin was undertaken by Flemish ministers Joke Schauvliege and Ben Weyts.

The Zwin gully will become both wider and deeper, because our excavators will dig, transport and raise 5,500 m3 of sand daily. All that sand will be going to? To form the new international dyke. It will be 4 km long, 7 metres high, 70 metres wide and will protect the Zwin from millennial storms.

We are also planning to constructing a bank protection in rock, a new canal system around the new dyke and a pumping station that will guarantee drainage of the hinterland. This will form the basis and then bushes will be planted, fresh pools, new breeding islands will be laid, and cattle and sheep will be welcomed. All of these can soon be seen from the new lookouts or the cycle tracks and footpaths. This way nature lovers will be able to watch the birds from their bike. Thereby satisfying two needs with one deed.

This demonstrates: another Aertssen project in which plenty of ‘People, Power & Passion’ are involved and about which the last word has not yet been written, as we will be working in the Zwin up to 2019. We will certainly keep you informed.
