In around five months’ time, our affiliate Earth Moving Worldwide (EMW) assisted with the expansion the Maldivian island of Hulhulmale. EMW’s role in this was sand suppletion on site. And they did this with great success.

At the client’s request, EMW sent not only experienced workmen and machine operators to the Maldivian island of Hulhulmale. Powerful machines also headed in that direction, including five Caterpillar-bulldozers, type D6R LGP (Low Ground Pressure), two Caterpillar 349D LGP excavation cranes, two Volvo A40F articulating haulers, and two Caterpillar type 980 wheel loaders, with a pipe clamp for dredging tubes.

600 machine hours per month
Our machines are working on site together with the world’s biggest hopper, which delivers sand to the quay at a lighting pace: in each trip, it transports some 46,000 m3. The EMW machines worked day and night. They recorded a total of around 600 machine-hours each month.

Movable work site
EMW didn’t start in the Maldives. They started in Abu Dhabi. After all, the success of such a project depends wholly on sound preparation. In Abu Dhabi, EMW assembled a mobile work site consisting of five containers, which housed all the required tools and accessories. These were more than necessary, since there are no distributors or suppliers in the Maldives for the machine’s accessory tools. So thorough preparation was an absolute must.

Looking back with satisfaction
After five intensive months, EMW’s job was finished. Together with his driven team, site manager Marcel Vanhee can certainly reflect contentedly: they set the bar really high for the competition. In short, another beautiful project.
