In Leuven, Aannemingsbedrijf Aertssen is putting its full resources into the expansion of the Gasthuisberg UZ Leuven campus. The hospital is relying on Aertssens’s expertise to significantly increase its parking capacity.

UZ Leuven is increasing its capacity with new buildings and a three-storey underground car park. When completed, there will be room for no less than 1,500 parking spaces.

Major depths

Meanwhile, the works at campus Gasthuisberg are at full flow with all necessary resources. During the demolition works at the beginning of October, we demolished, using breakers, approximately 10,000 m² of existing parking space, before commencing the excavation works. Since then, work on the impressive 210,000 m³ building excavation has continued daily.

At the site, we employ long-reach excavators to carry out the excavation. The building excavation is 18 metres deep, with a pile wall surround, being required to be able to realise the three-storey car park.

Multimodal challenge

The expected return can be achieved by combining multimodal transport – by road and water. This is where our sister company Ship-iT comes to our aid. In total, we export 400,000 tons of excavated material from this site, an average of three to five thousand tons per day!

A truly multimodal challenge, which Aertssen is keen to contribute to. Until March 2018 we will still be working at full flow at Gasthuisberg to transform the “mountain” into a real construction.
