A multifunctional public space will soon be created on the Spoor Oost grounds in Antwerp. Aannemingsbedrijf Aertssen was awarded the contract by the city of Antwerp for various earthworks, infrastructure and roadway engineering.

Spoor Oost is a former container terminal of nearly 11 ha, located on Antwerp’s Noordersingel. By redeveloping this domain, three needs will soon be satisfied: the surrounding residential neighbourhoods will get a pleasant public space, the nearby Sportpaleis and the Lotto Arena will get more parking capacity, and various events – such as the Sinksenfoor, for example – will get a new location there.

Old industrial charm
With the restructuring of the areas, the existing conditions are kept wherever possible: sewerage and roadworks will be expanded, but the current industrial infrastructure and railways will be retained. The existant industrial infrastructure and railways will also be retained – an acknowledgement of the grounds’ history. The four old rail cars are a good example of this: they will stay in place and become play and seating features. Some of the concrete rail ties, buffer blocks and switch operating mechanisms will also be retained. These are intended to give the site an extra special appearance.

Play, sports and parking
What will Spoor Oost come to look like? A traffic artery, which will divide the domain into a green portion on the western side and a paved area on the eastern side, will run from north to south. On the green side, a playground with benches for seating will appear among the trees and the grass. On the eastern side, there will be space to park 2300 cars or for events to set up their tents. Tennis courts, volleyball courts, football pitches, athletic grounds and a dance floor will also soon provide a huge range of athletic possibilities.

Ready for the Sinksenfoor
Aertssen is cooperating industriously on this metamorphosis. We started our work in early September 2015 and our deadline is Whitsunday 2016 – the start of Sinksenfoor. It’s a tight schedule for a large-scale assignment. Fortunately, our motivated team is working hard to ensure that the doughnut stands and bumper cars will soon have a fresh new place.
