Aertssen excels during expansion works at Muscat International Airport

Aertssen is active in the Middle East. In Oman, we are working on some impressive projects, including Muscat airport. A government investment of more than $5 billion. Together with Mobilift & Partners, Aertssen Machinery Services lifted gigantic structural components into position as part of 18,000 m² aircraft hangars, which can easily accommodate an A380 Airbus. It is the largest project of this type in the region.

Ten times synchronous lifting

An impressive but complex assignment. Thanks to our years of experience we have made a confident start. By computing in our lifts plans the ground pressure, maximum wind velocity, dimensions and weights the heavy components for the steel structure of the hangars could be quickly lifted. Two crawler cranes Terex CC2400-1 (400 tonne capacity) and two Hitachi SCX 1500/3 cranes (150 tonne capacity) performed no less than ten tandem lifts.

Not moving for 48 hours

Lifting the eight 168 tonne lattice trusses into position was not the real challenge, nor the two 386 tonne lattice trusses for the entrance. Keeping the very heavy trusses stable during installation – for more than 48 hours – that was a different matter. Our crane operators had to constantly monitor the eight lifting points so that the trusses could be fixed to the structure.

Complex, large and unique

Complex architecture, an exceptionally large building structure and lots of responsibility – because Aertssen was not only responsible for the lifting activities, but also for the study, the supervision during the lifting activities and the testing. A strong partnership and our exceptional technical knowledge turned this into another successful project.
