In recent years, Qatar has invested significantly in its infrastructure. At the moment, one of the most important projects is the New Orbital Highway Project – a new motorway from the Ras Laffan industrial area to the new port of Doha. Aertssen is helping to build one of the widest roads in the world, as there is sufficient space for heavy goods traffic, it will soon be running over four exclusive lanes in a total of no less than 14 lanes. The motorway will be 200 km long.

A first

As a group, we are very proud of our first major heavy transport contract for the New Orbital Highway. Our drivers will transport no less than 2,168 concrete bridge decks of some 92 tons each from the production site to the installation site. Where, our lifting specialists will take over and will install the thousands of bridge decks that are needed for the construction of all 22 road junctions. To do this, we utilized no less than six Hitachi SCX2800-2 crawler cranes (280 tonne capacity). A few smaller cranes will provide additional support during the further course of the project.

Working together

Whereas the New Orbital Highway Project may be a first in terms of size, not so the collaboration between our different company divisions, based in Qatar. We have joined forces before with the construction of the Khalifa Stadium in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, the new metro, the Hamad Port and other infrastructure and steel construction projects. Our earthworks division and transport specialists also worked together in transporting a large crushing equipment to the building site. With various projects – both in Belgium and the Middle East – we see that our strong internal coordination and communications ensure fast and smooth execution. This once more proves that collaborations within our group always translates into People, Power and Passion to build on!
